Our view : Blaufränkisch is the link that binds together our two sides of the lake - Wagram-Heideboden and Leithagebirge. The grapes originate from and thrive in both the fertile loess and loam soils around Gols and the limestone and fossil-rich sites of the Leithagebirge. And they ripen in the earliest, most wind-protected and sun-filled sites of these areas as well. Because such optimal conditions are what Blaufränkisch, no matter how tolerant and diverse a variety, insists on - if it is to become a truly good, classic Blaufränkisch.
Characteristics : This Austrian showcase variety reveals an aroma of fresh blackberries accompanied by a floral scent. The characteristic spiciness is underscored by a licorice expression. On the palate are vibrant red berry notes and fresh tones of ripe sour cherries. An elegant texture with a subtle but long, mineral finish.
Origin : 10 - 25 year old vines in optimal sites of the Heideboden, on the southern slopes of the Parndorfer Platte, as well as on the Leithagebirge.
Vinification : Harvested by hand from the end of September to mid October 2008; selection in the vineyard, with very careful follow-up selection on the sorting belt in the winery; processed according to the gravity principle (without the use of pumps); spontaneous fermentation in steel tanks at 28 to 32°C; pumping over with Pulsair system; malolactic fermentation in steel tanks; aged in oak fermentation vats and twice-used barriques; bottled at the end of November 2009 and May 2010 with glass closures.
