Tomás Esteban comes from a very old family of viticulturists and vine-growers. He had the skill, more than 25 years ago, to plant his vineyards and graft on to them old vines of high quality that were particularly suited to the local conditions. Going against what was the fashion at that time, he chose the traditional bush vine system, rather than the trellis system,  because he felt that it was better suited to the climate of the Ribera del Duero. The vineyards of  Bodegas y Viñedos Valderiz currently consist of 60  hectares planted by Tomás Esteban and 10 hectares  which belonged to his father and which have been successfully maintained. They occupy more than 35 plots with different soils and in different positions and are all within the bounderies of his village of Roa de Duero. The family was one of the first to take up ecological agriculture in the Ribera del Duero. The complete absence of herbicides, pesticides and mineral fertilizers is our hallmark. This type of cultivation has enabled us to achieve a well balanced plant and a residue free soil, resulting in a fruit of exceptional quality. Since the year 2000, a small area of land has been cultivated using biodynamic practices.
